Countertop Care Tips – Minneapolis | St. Paul

Have your countertops lost their luster?

Here are the three most common reasons your countertops may have lost their shine — and what can be done to bring them back to life.

Soap Build-up

The Problem: Soap-based cleaners, even dish soap, if not thoroughly rinsed, may create a dull film.

The Fix: Stop using dish soap to clean your counters. With consistent use of stone-safe neutral cleaners, soap or other residual build-up will eventually go away. Consider having a professional deep cleaning service to have the surface film removed.

Sealer on the Surface

The Problem: Sealer that was applied over a less than perfectly clean surface or sealer that was not completely removed from the surface will result in a dull or blotchy appearance.

The Fix: Excess sealer needs to be removed, followed by a deep cleaning and reapplication of sealer. TIP: Excess sealer on the surface may often be removed by reapplying new sealer to soften the previously applied sealer, followed by complete removal of every trace of sealer from the surface. Many property owners choose to have professional application of sealer to avoid the potential problems and to make sure the sealer provides maximum protection.

Etching

The Problem: Etching is a common issue with marble and other calcite based natural stones. It’s the result of acidic substances coming in contact with a stone surface, leaving a whitish or dull mark or area. When etching is minor it creates a dull, flat looking surface. In more severe instances, you can feel roughness with your fingers.

The Fix: For minor etching on polished surfaces only, use an Etch Remover Marble Polishing paste (visit www.stonecarecentral.com). For more severe etching or for larger areas, contact your stone restoration professional. TIP: Use coasters under glasses and avoid using acidic cleaners to avoid the most common causes of etching.
